What has changed since the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)?
Much has changed in data protection since the introduction of the GDPR in 2018. Data subjects have more rights regarding the processing of personal data. They have the right to know the purpose for processing personal data, to request the deletion of personal data and even request the transfer of personal data to another data controller. Companies must comply with stricter requirements to avoid the high fines.
Data protection officers and data protection training
Article 37 of the GDPR specifies that certain companies are obligated to appoint a data protection officer. His or her tasks include not only checking whether the company is complying with the relevant requirements, but also raising employee awareness of them. An effective way to raise employee awareness is data protection training, which informs employees about the most important regulations for processing personal data. A lack of employee education leads to high penalties and fines when data protection is violated.
GDPR and international data protection regulations
The GDPR was implemented in 2018 with the aim of providing EU countries with uniform data protection rules. The GDPR applies to data processing of any data subject located within the EU.
In addition to the EU requirements, there are further requirements to be observed in international situations. The Data Protection Act (DPA) in the UK, the Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados (LGPD) in Brazil or the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) in China are just a few examples of international data protection regulations.
