What is the growth mindset?

The term “growth mindset” was first coined in 2006 by Carol Dweck in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. According to Dweck, a growth mindset is built on the belief in one’s own ability to learn. People with a robust growth mindset believe that concepts such as intelligence and their own abilities can be developed and improved with time, effort and energy. This makes them more willing to take on challenges, overcome obstacles, learn from their own mistakes and be inspired by other people and their successes.


Growth Mindset vs. Fixed Mindset

The opposite of the growth mindset is the fixed mindset. People with a fixed mindset avoid challenges and quickly give up when faced with the smallest of obstacles. They believe that intelligence and one’s abilities are innate and can’t be radically changed. As a result, effort and personal development are considered pointless. Feedback is also often perceived as a personal attack and not welcomed. People with a fixed mindset want to look good in front of others and appear smart, but without putting in the time or effort.
